Vein Conditions

Venous diseases of the legs, including varicose veins, spider veins and leg ulcers, occur when veins in the leg become elongated and weaken. Since veins do not have muscle tissue, they bring blood back to the heart by relying on muscle contractions in the feet and legs, along with a series of valves inside each vein. Varicose veins and related conditions form when this series of valves no longer do their job of preventing blood from flowing backward, which causes the blood to pool in the veins of the leg, thus causing the veins to enlarge or bulge out.

When left untreated, venous diseases can lead to blood clots or skin ulcers. They can also be a signal of an underlying problem with blood circulation.
